I decided to write this book, for several reasons. First, is for personal healing, and the second reason was, I want to educate people, and to raise the awareness of the effect child abuse has on its victims.
I also feel the need to reach out to those whom have been abused and let them know that they are not alone.
Robbed of a Childhood will give you an insight of the effects child abuse has on children.
We as parents have a duty to our kids, we need to firstly listen to what our children tell us, and we also have a duty to protect, and keep our kids safe from the evil monsters lurking in our neighbourhoods and preying on our young innocent children.
I don’t want your sympathy, I want you to step back and look how you are raising your children, if you are doing any of the things my parents had done to me, I beg you to stop and seek help.

As an abused child, I just cannot forget about what I had to endure. I would carry it with me for the rest of my life weather I like it or not.

Prologue from Robbed of a Childhood - a true story

I kept the events of my childhood abuse a secret form everyone except my wife Penny, mainly because I feared my abusers. I was intimidated and threatened with more beatings if I ever told anyone about the way I was being treated from as young as four years old.

When I married in 1992, and started having children of my own, I thought I could just put the tragic events of my childhood behind me and just forget everything. I was so wrong, the more I bottled up, the angrier I become towards my abusers. I didn’t know the effects this would have on my own children. I was unable to escape from my abusers, every time I moved house they would find me through my siblings, I felt the only way to escape was to move far away and cut off the contact with my brothers and sisters.

It effects the way I raise my own children in one way or another, and I believe, if we are not educated enough, and encouraged to break the cycle of abuse, many other innocent young children will suffer. It is time to Stop child abuse, whether it is verbal, mental, physical, or sexual abuse. We as parents have the power to stop it, and we MUST stop it NOW.

For Rob and his siblings, family life began in Lower Hutt but their childhood was at best unpleasant, at worst, dictated by a home-life of hostility and neglect. His young parents would prefer to buy a stereo rather than clothe and feed their children, and with the full knowledge of his mother, Rob was his father's punching bag. Holidays were a nightmare as he, and then his brother were sent away to a man they called their 'Unce". Repeatedly raped by him, Rob sadly learns his sister has not fared any better at home with their father.

When he married in 1992, he felt he could finally put his past to rest - a chance to begin a family of his own. Instead his parents continued their relentless hold on him insisting he remain in the family home even after his marriage.

With the birth of his first child, Rob realises he must leave Wellington and then New Zealand to end this tragic and destructive cycle. Now in his thirties and drug free, Rob realised he had to confront the man who called himself his father ...
